Due to the new school schedule, I will no longer be using the blog to post daily homework reminders.  Please refer to the class calendar on Veracross.  The class blog will still be a source for helpful links and other announcements, but the daily updates will be discontinued.

Homework reminders for next time

ENGLISH 9:
Period 2: Make sure you've reached your IR goal for the first week by Wednesday's class.

Periods 4 & 7: Please read pp. 30-38 in HGM with a pen or pencil in hand.  Mark places that you find surprising, interesting, or confusing (S.I.C.) as you go.  I'm going to have you turn some of your observations into dialogic notes in the next class.

HONORS BRITISH LIT:
Period 3: Please respond to the online discussion post on the class Veracross website.

Period 8: Please finish reading Beowulf for next class.

Homework reminders for next class

ENGLISH 9:
At the beginning of the next class, I'll check in with you to see if you've met your Independent Reading goal for the first full week.  Start getting in the habit of finding time during your day to work on your IR book--in the morning before your first class, during the interim, in study hall, or in the second half of your lunch period.

HONORS BRITISH LIT:
Finish Beowulf for next time.  Check out Wiglaf's funeral speech in the last section.  Ultimately, what are supposed to feel about Beowulf the hero: admiration, disappointment, disgust? Is this poem trying to tell us something about the limits of this kind of mythical heroism?
Keep up with your IR reading for the week!
Homework reminders for next class

ENGLISH 9:
Period 2: Please read pp. 22-29, the "Demeter" chapter, in HGM.  Our first quiz is next class and it will cover HGM so far and the details we've discussed from the Greek gods family tree.
Don't forget to hit your IR weekly goal!

Periods 4 & 7: Hit or exceed your weekly IR goal!

HONORS BRITISH LIT:
Please read up to "Beowulf Fights the Dragon."  Our first Beowulf quiz is next class.

You need to hit your first weekly Independent Reading goal (measured in pages) by Monday.

Homework reminders for next class

ENGLISH 9:
Period 2, 4, & 7: Please read pp. 22-29, the "Demeter" chapter in HGM.  Please review the mythology family tree we went over in class and the HGM stories so far.  Our first quiz is next class, and I'm going to ask you How/Why questions about our mythology discussions so far.  For example, you might see something like, "How did Rhea help her son rebel against his father?" or "Why did Zeus decide to eat Metis?"

Keep up with your Independent Reading as well.  Find 10 minutes here and there throughout your day to get your pages in.

HONORS BRITISH LIT:
Periods 3 & 8:  Please read up to but not including "Beowulf Fights the Dragon."

This is Beowulf 50 years after he first attained glory from killing Grendel.  Why does he insist on fighting the dragon himself, when Hrothgar let the young thanes try their hands at killing Grendel?   We'll have our first Beowulf quiz next class.  It will involve you writing a paragraph to support an interpretation of the poem.

Don't forget that your personal essays are due by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.

Keep up with your Independent Reading as well.  You'll need to have hit your weekly goal of page numbers the next time I see you.

HONORS BRITISH LIT:
Periods 3 & 8:  Please read up to but not including "Beowulf Fights Grendel's Mother."

In Beowulf's first fight, he is the defender of a space against an intruder.  Now he is the intruder.   Is this killing as morally justifiable as the other?

Audio clips of the translator, Irish poet Seamus Heaney, reading these sections are shared with you in the class folder.  Check them out!
